Kichcha Sudeep’s Billa Ranga Baashaa: First Blood has begun building anticipation with a striking new poster that offers the first major glimpse into the world of the much-awaited sci-fi action thriller. Unveiled on Sudeep’s birthday on Wednesday, the poster also confirms that the ambitious project is targeting a worldwide theatrical release in the fourth quarter of 2027.
Directed by Anup Bhandari, the film is set in a dystopian future in 2209 AD and promises to combine futuristic technology with an unusual retro-mechanical aesthetic. While the makers have kept much of the film’s plot and characters under wraps, the birthday poster gives audiences a clear indication of the scale and visual ambition behind the project.
A glimpse into Sudeep’s futuristic world
The poster features Sudeep in a rugged new avatar, complete with a thick beard, textured dark hair and steampunk-inspired aviator goggles perched on his forehead. Wearing layered winter clothing with a prominent fur-trimmed collar, the actor is seen riding a customised vintage motorcycle across what appears to be a snow-covered battlefield.
The setting behind him is equally striking. A massive steampunk-style locomotive or airship appears to be crashing through the sky, surrounded by smoke and flames, while retro-futuristic propeller aircraft fly through the cloudy winter landscape. The combination of advanced technology, vintage machinery and a post-apocalyptic setting hints at a distinctive visual language for the film.
Billa Ranga Baashaa marks Sudeep and Bhandari’s second collaboration after Vikrant Rona. While their earlier film explored a mysterious fictional world through fantasy and action, their new project takes them into an entirely different genre and scale. The futuristic setting, elaborate production design and extensive action sequences are expected to form the backbone of the film.
A massive production with a carefully planned campaign
The film is currently being shot in Bengaluru, where a massive set has been constructed for the production. Bhandari has also revealed that the team is relying extensively on pre-visualisation while designing the film, using storyboards, 3D animation and digital tools to plan complex sequences before taking them to the sets.
Produced by K Niranjan Reddy and Chaitanya Reddy under the Primeshow Entertainment banner, Billa Ranga Baashaa brings together the producers behind the pan-India success HanuMan with Sudeep and Bhandari. The project is being mounted as one of the biggest productions in Sudeep’s career, with large-scale sets, action choreography and visual effects playing an important role in creating its futuristic world.
The makers have already laid out an extensive promotional roadmap. The first teaser is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2027, while the trailer and songs are planned for the third quarter. The film is subsequently scheduled to reach theatres worldwide during the final quarter of the year.
The long lead-up should give Bhandari and his team enough time to establish the film’s elaborate universe and build curiosity around its mysterious storyline. With the narrative taking place more than a century into the future, the production design itself could emerge as one of the film’s biggest talking points.
Details about the rest of the cast remain closely guarded. Veteran actor Malashree has reportedly been associated with the project, but the makers have maintained considerable secrecy regarding the other characters. Behind the camera, cinematographer William David and production designer Shivakumar are part of the technical team. Shivakumar previously worked with Sudeep and Bhandari on Vikrant Rona.
For now, Billa Ranga Baashaa continues to reveal itself one detail at a time. With Sudeep at its centre and Bhandari attempting to create an expansive dystopian universe, the film is shaping up to be a distinctive addition to Indian sci-fi cinema.
