Jayasurya’s Kathanar – The Wild Sorcerer remains one of the most eagerly awaited projects in Malayalam cinema, and the latest social media exchange between the actor and director Rojin Thomas has only added to the anticipation. As fans continue to wait for an official update on the film’s release, Jayasurya marked Rojin’s birthday with a playful post that appeared to ask the filmmaker the question everyone wants answered: when is Kathanar arriving?
Taking to Instagram, Jayasurya shared a humorous photograph with Rojin in which he is seen playfully holding a knife against the director’s chest. The actor accompanied the picture with a tongue-in-cheek message, asking Rojin whether he was planning to release Kathanar or whether Jayasurya should “release the knife” instead.
The joke struck a chord with fans, many of whom have been waiting for news about the film after its long production and post-production journey. Rojin, meanwhile, played along with the humour, responding that he could not reveal the details yet but assured fans that an announcement would be made as soon as possible.
Kathanar’s ambitious world continues to intrigue
Directed by Rojin Thomas, Kathanar – The Wild Sorcerer is the filmmaker’s follow-up to Home, the acclaimed Malayalam film that won him the National Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues. The new project represents a dramatic departure in scale, with Rojin attempting to create an expansive fantasy adventure rooted in the legendary folklore surrounding Kadamattathu Kathanar.
Jayasurya plays the titular character, a mysterious priest and sorcerer whose exploits have been part of Kerala’s folklore for generations. The film has been mounted on a considerably larger scale than a conventional Malayalam production, with extensive visual effects and technological innovations being used to create its period setting and fantastical elements.
Produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the Sree Gokulam Movies banner, the project has been in production for several years. Its lengthy making has been closely followed by audiences, particularly because of the scale of the visual spectacle promised by the makers. The film is currently in the final stages of post-production as the team works towards completing the extensive visual effects.
A pan-Indian fantasy adventure in the making
Kathanar also boasts a diverse ensemble cast. Anushka Shetty, Prabhudeva, Vineeth, Sanoop Santh, Sandy, Nitish Bharadwaj and Harish Uthaman are among the actors associated with the project. The presence of established names from different Indian film industries has further strengthened expectations that the film is being positioned as a pan-Indian release.
The makers are also planning to release Kathanar in around 15 languages, making it one of the most ambitious projects of Jayasurya’s career. While the scale of the film has been evident through the glimpses and promotional material released so far, the audience is now waiting for the makers to reveal when they can finally experience Rojin’s fantasy world on the big screen.
For Jayasurya, Kathanar is among several projects currently generating interest. The actor is also associated with Titans, directed by Prince Joy, and Mayan, helmed by Jithin K Jose, who previously directed Kalamkaval.
Until an official announcement arrives, Jayasurya’s birthday exchange with Rojin has given fans something to laugh about while once again highlighting the one question surrounding Kathanar: when will the Wild Sorcerer finally arrive?
