Mammootty has given his fans a special birthday surprise with the title and first look of his upcoming film with Nithish Sahadev. Unveiled at midnight on September 7, coinciding with the superstar’s 75th birthday, the film has been titled Mela. The project marks the ninth production venture from Mammootty Kampany and promises to bring together the veteran actor’s star power with the young filmmaker’s knack for rooted, crowd-pleasing entertainers.
The first look presents Mammootty in a striking mass avatar. Dressed in a black shirt and black mundu and wielding a machete, the actor cuts an imposing figure in the poster. The film is being billed as a massive mass action-comedy entertainer, suggesting a blend of high-energy action and the humour that has been central to Nithish Sahadev’s work.
Interestingly, Mela is not a new title in Mammootty’s filmography. The actor previously appeared in K.G. George’s 1980 film of the same name, where he played a supporting role as a motorcycle stunt performer associated with a circus. Reghu played the principal character in that film. The new project, however, has no connection to the earlier Mela. It is being styled as Mammoottyude Mela, or Mammootty’s Mela, to distinguish the two.
A New Mela From the Director of Falimy
Directed by Nithish Sahadev, the upcoming film marks the filmmaker’s return to Malayalam cinema after his successful Tamil outing Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, popularly known as TTT. Nithish made his directorial debut with Falimy, starring Basil Joseph, which emerged as a solid performer at the box office and earned appreciation for its blend of humour, family dynamics and emotional warmth.
Falimy reportedly grossed around ₹15 crore worldwide on a relatively modest budget. Its success established Nithish as a filmmaker capable of making commercially viable entertainers without relying on extravagant production scales.
His second film, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, starring Jiiva, took that reputation further. Made on a reported budget of around ₹10 crore, the Tamil film went on to gross approximately ₹40 crore worldwide. Despite being a Tamil-language film, it was widely noted for its grounded storytelling and natural humour, with its sensibility often being described as distinctly “Malayalam-esque”. The film also proved to be an important comeback vehicle for Jiiva.
Mammootty and Nithish Sahadev’s Promising Collaboration
Mela brings Nithish back to Malayalam cinema with one of its biggest stars, and the combination is already generating considerable curiosity. The screenplay has been penned by Nithish and Anuraj O.B., who also collaborated on Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil. Their reunion should make for an interesting combination, particularly given the grounded comic sensibility they brought to their previous film.
The technical crew includes Vishnu Vijay as the composer and Jimshi Khalid as the cinematographer. Vijay, known for his work on films including Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, and Khalid, whose credits include Thallumaala, add further interest to the project’s sound and visual language. Mammootty Kampany is producing the film, while Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films will handle its distribution.
Filming for Mela commenced in late July and is currently progressing. With Mammootty stepping into another potentially crowd-friendly role and Nithish Sahadev coming off two commercially successful outings, the film arrives with an intriguing combination of star power, humour and mass appeal. For Mammootty, meanwhile, Mela becomes another exciting addition to an already packed slate as he enters his 75th year.
