Aamir Khan Opens Up On The Theatrical Vs Streaming Debate: Itâs Not a Graceful Compromise

In the constantly evolving world of cinema, the tug-of-war between big-screen releases and streaming platforms continues to be a hot topic. Now, Aamir Khan has added his voice to the conversation, sharing some candid thoughts on the current state of the industry. In an exclusive chat with Variety India, he expressed his concerns about how movies are being distributed today. Aamir’s comments come at a time when even Hollywood icons like Leonardo DiCaprio have talked about the shrinking theatrical window. DiCaprio recently mentioned that watching films in a cinema hall is vital for keeping the communal magic of movies alive. Supporting these sentiments, Aamir admitted that the current balance in India isn’t quite where it needs to be.

Aamir said, “Right now, it’s not a graceful compromise. That’s not a good situation to be in. So, I think a graceful compromise is much better, but at this point of time, it doesn’t look graceful to me from any angle.” He pointed out that this isn’t just a challenge for Hindi cinema. He revealed that many producers in the South are facing similar struggles when trying to balance theatrical runs with streaming mandates. He added, “A lot of producers are facing that and not just in Hindi. In the South as well, a lot of producers I’ve spoken to are facing this problem. I agree with what Leonardo DiCaprio said, that the theatrical window needs to be protected to some extent. If you want the theatrical business to thrive and be healthy, you need to protect it.”

However, Aamir doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. As a producer himself, he suggests that a more flexible system is needed. He shared, “Well, I think you need to work on different models. Mainstream films, which have a lot at stake, need a slightly longer window. A film like Dhurandhar benefited from it. I think some really big films can have longer theatrical windows. Maybe small, experimental films need shorter ones. So, we need to have a flexible model.”

Aamir was last seen on the big screen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which released in June 2025. The film, directed by RS Prasanna and starring Genelia Deshmukh, earned nearly ₹200 crores at the box office.
