Anil Kapoor Talks About Working In Yash Chopra’s Lamhe, Says He Felt N@ked For This Reason

Anil Kapoor has always been known for making bold choices in his career and one of his most daring decisions was working in the movie Lamhe (1991). Directed by Yash Chopra and featuring Sridevi alongside him, the film told a unique story that did not resonate with audiences at the time.

The narrative, centered on a man who develops feelings for both a mother and her daughter, was considered too unconventional for mainstream success. However, as years passed, Lamhe found a devoted audience and is now regarded as a film ahead of its time. Anil even humorously suggested that his clean-shaven look in the film may have contributed to its initial failure.

Reflecting on the experience, Anil recalled feeling naked without his signature mustache and many fans were taken aback by the drastic change. Audiences who had adored his roles in Ram Lakhan (1989), Tezaab (1988) and Mr. India were not prepared for this transformation. Beyond his appearance, the film’s storyline was also seen as too progressive for its era. However, Anil was always confident in the film’s lasting impact, believing that it would eventually be recognised for its artistic merit.

In an interview, Anil expressed his belief that a film like Lamhe would withstand the test of time. He noted that while commercial films that fail can often hurt an actor’s career, well-made films with strong direction and talented co-stars continue to enhance an actor’s credibility, even if they are not initially successful. By working with renowned filmmakers and actors, he felt he had solidified his reputation as both a professional and a star.

Despite its initial box office disappointment, Lamhe eventually earned critical appreciation and developed a cult following. What was once considered too unconventional has now become a celebrated film in Indian cinema, proving that some stories just need time to be truly appreciated.
