Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Sacred Games is one of the best Indian web series. It had a stellar cast of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, Neeraj Kabi, Pankaj Tripathi, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Kubra Sait and more.
In a recent interview, Kashyap revealed that he had suggested Manju Warrier’s name to the makers for the role of RAW agent Kusum Devi Yadav. Eventually, Amruta Subhash essayed the role in the second season. He had also suggested Nayanthara’s name.
The filmmaker said, “We were trying to get her (Manju) for Amrita Subhash’s role… Different language actor… We were auditioning for Sacred Games. We gave them (Netflix) three options. We gave them an option of her, Nayanthara and one more person.”
He continued, “At that time, Netflix didn’t have an India office. So, everything was going to the US. And at that time, OTT was not really looking at South films. They were not looking at the South market. They wanted an actress to be picked up from where their market is. It was limited to Maharashtra or anywhere. Their choices are always based on algorithms where they are getting subscribers.”
Anurag Kashyap also opened up about his long-standing association with Manju and recalled that they first met around 2013. “We have common friends between us, Geetu Mohandas and Rajeev Ravi. And we share the same birthday.” He also revealed that Manju Warrier reached out to him and asked for his feedback on the film Footage as she was planning to release it in the Hindi market.
Meanwhile, Sacred Games is a crime-thriller series based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 novel of the same name. It was created by Motwane and co-directed by Kashyap, Neeraj Ghaywan and Motwane. After the second season ended on a cliff hanger, fans of the show were eagerly anticipating the third season. However, it got shelved.
