Arun Govil Praises Ranbir Kapoorâs Look As Lord Ram

The upcoming cinematic adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana has been generating constant buzz for its star cast. Arun Govil, who became a household name for his iconic portrayal of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s 1987 television series, has come forward to praise Ranbir Kapoor for the lead role in Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious project.

Speaking at a recent event organized by the FWICE and Cine Artiste Welfare Trust (CAWT), Arun Govil expressed his confidence in the film and its casting. The veteran actor, who is also part of this project in the role of King Dasharatha, praised the efforts of the director and the cast.

On Ranbir Kapoor’s performance, Govil was all praise, mentioning that he possesses the qualities necessary for such a spiritual role. He said, “The main actor Ranbir Kapoor is looking very good as Lord Ram. He is a good actor and a good human being.” He further explained that playing a divine figure requires more than just acting skills. He added, “To play a God, you’ve to have a good, pure soul, and you have to be a good human being also.”

Having set the gold standard for the character decades ago, Arun Govil acknowledged that comparisons are inevitable. However, he shared that the visual representation of a deity is crucial for the audience’s connection. He explained, “I believe that in order to play the role of God, you should look like that. The look is very important. When people see you, they should see God in you, and think, ‘God can be like that’.”

While discussing the new adaptation, Arun Govil made it clear that Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana should not be compared to the 2022 film Adipurush, which starred Prabhas and faced heavy criticism. He dismissed any parallels between the two, simply stating, “There is a lot of difference between Ramayana and Adipurush.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, this two-part project features a star-studded cast including Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The first part is scheduled for an IMAX release during Diwali 2026, followed by the second part in Diwali 2027.

Arun Govil, who has already completed his portions for the film, described his time on set as a positive experience, saying that the entire team has put in a great deal of hard work to bring this 5,000-year-old epic to life.
