The Bharatanatyam franchise is officially growing bigger. The makers have announced the third instalment in the comedy series, titled Rasaleela, with director Krishnadas Murali returning to helm the project and Saiju Kurup set to reprise the lead role.
The announcement has been met with enthusiastic reactions on social media, where fans of the franchise welcomed the return of one of Malayalam cinema’s most successful recent comedy entertainers. Although details about the plot remain tightly under wraps, the confirmation of a third film signals the makers’ confidence in a series that has steadily built a loyal following over the years.
A franchise that found its audience over time
The journey of the Bharatanatyam series has been anything but conventional. When the first film hit theatres, it received a modest response at the box office and did not immediately emerge as a commercial success. However, positive word of mouth gradually worked in its favour, with audiences discovering the film after its theatrical run and appreciating its blend of humour, family drama and relatable characters.
As conversations around the film grew, so did its popularity. The warm reception eventually encouraged the makers to continue the story with a sequel, proving that audience support can often extend far beyond opening weekend numbers.
That decision paid off handsomely. Bharatanatyam 2: Mohiniyattam enjoyed a significantly stronger theatrical performance, attracting larger crowds and establishing the franchise as a dependable entertainer. The sequel not only strengthened the series’ fan base but also demonstrated that its quirky humour and ensemble storytelling had found a lasting place with Malayalam audiences.
Saiju Kurup returns as the franchise moves forward
With Rasaleela now officially announced, Saiju Kurup is set to once again lead the franchise. Known for his effortless comic timing and versatility, the actor has played a key role in shaping the identity of the series, making his return one of the biggest highlights of the announcement.

Krishnadas Murali also returns as director, ensuring continuity in both tone and storytelling. While the makers are yet to reveal the film’s supporting cast, expectations are high that several familiar faces from the earlier instalments could make a comeback.
The second film featured an extensive ensemble that included Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jagadish, Vinay Forrt, Baby Jean, Kalaranjini, Sreeja Ravi, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Swathi Das Prabhu, Divya Nair, Shruthi Suresh, Nandu Poduval, Jinil, Jivin, Santhosh Guruvayur and Nistar Sait. Their performances contributed significantly to the film’s comic energy and emotional appeal.
The title Rasaleela has already sparked curiosity among fans, especially given the franchise’s tradition of drawing inspiration from classical Indian art forms for its titles. Whether the third instalment follows the same family-centric narrative or introduces an entirely new conflict remains to be seen.
For now, the makers have only confirmed the film’s title and core creative team. More information regarding the supporting cast, technical crew, production schedule, and release plans is expected to be announced in the coming months.
With Bharatanatyam evolving from a sleeper success into a recognised comedy franchise, Rasaleela carries the weight of growing expectations. If the enthusiasm surrounding the announcement is any indication, Malayalam audiences are more than ready to return for another round of laughter when the next chapter finally arrives.
