Cant support AIs plagiarising… – Vishal Dadlani calls out Ghibli trend

If you are even remotely online, you can see your feed flooded with images inspired by Studio Ghibli’s anime style. OpenAI’s image generator GPT-4o is responsible for this trend. People can submit their photos, and AI will recreate them in Ghibli’s style. While a lot of people, including celebrities, have hopped on this trend, a lot of people have criticised it. Now, singer Vishal Dadlani has shared his opinion on the trend and stated that he didn’t participate in it as he can’t support AI’s plagiarising of an artist’s work.
He took to Instagram’s story section to share a statement that read, “Sorry I’m not sharing any of the Studio Ghibli style images you guys have made of or for me. I just can’t bring myself to support AI’s plagiarisation of an artists life’s work.”

Talking about the environmental damages of AI, he continued, “Not to mention, the environmental horror that those images are. Please do NOT make any more. Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki, a Japanese animator and the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, called the AI-generated animation an “insult to life itself.” He criticised the use of artificial intelligence in art. Miyazaki said, “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animated studio, was founded by Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki in 1985. Some of its most notable works include My Neighbour Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and the Boy and the Heron.
On the other hand, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that he is thrilled with the success of the trend and with people using ChatGPT to generate Ghibli-style animated images.
