This 10-day mission marks the first time humans have left Earth’s orbit and travelled towards the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Reid Wiseman is an experienced naval aviator, test pilot, and engineer with a long career in both the military and space exploration. He is the Commander of Artemis II, leading a crew of four to test the Orion spacecraft’s systems in lunar orbit. Selected as an astronaut in 2009, Reid previously served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2014, spending 165 days in space. The 50-year-old was also the Chief of the Astronaut Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre from 2020 to 2022. He is a Baltimore native, holds a Master’s in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and has over 27 years of service in the US Navy.
