Dwayne Johnson Opens Up On Bringing Maui to Life in Disneyâs Live-Action Moana

Disney’s Moana is set to return once again, with the live-action adaptation releasing in cinemas on July 10. The film, which will be released in both English and Hindi, stars Dwayne Johnson reprising his beloved role as the demigod Maui, alongside Catherine Laga’aia, who steps into the title role of Moana.

As the film’s release date nears, the stars are currently engaged in a global promotional tour. During a recent interview, Johnson discussed the unique experience of revisiting a character he has voiced in the animated franchise for over a decade, but this time, stepping into the role for a live-action spectacle. He said, “Yes, this experience of playing Maui live action is unlike anything I have done in my career. But it’s just different when playing a human being, flesh and blood. And you see real culture and our people up there on the screen, showcasing our values. Our values of Polynesian culture and community are not just specific to us; it’s universal. As everyone can relate to the young girl or young boy who wants more out of life.”

For Johnson, the passage of time and his personal growth have played a big role in his performance. When the original animated Moana was released, Johnson was already a father, and a decade later, he continues to raise his young daughters. He mentioned that this journey has allowed him to bring a deeper and more nuanced perspective to the character of Maui.

Talking about the evolution of his performance, Johnson shared in another interview, “Ten years ago, I played a different kind of Maui. Today, I’ve lived a life as a father, been through the ups and downs and everything in between. Bringing those experiences to this role has been incredibly rewarding. I don’t know if an opportunity like this will come around again, so it feels very special.”
