Suriya’s fantasy action drama Karuppu has added another major milestone to its theatrical journey. According to the latest figures shared by the makers, the film has now crossed the Rs 300 crore mark at the worldwide box office in its third week of release, further cementing its position as one of the biggest Tamil hits of the year.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu marked the filmmaker-actor’s first collaboration with Suriya. The film arrived in theatres amid considerable anticipation and opened to mixed-to-positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. While viewers praised its mass moments, emotional undercurrents and Suriya’s commanding screen presence, some criticism was directed at portions of the latter half, particularly its narrative conveniences and uneven pacing.

Suriya and Trisha reunite after two decades

In the film, Suriya plays the titular guardian deity Karuppasamy, who takes the form of a lawyer after a desperate devotee seeks divine intervention. Faced with an endlessly delayed court case and a justice system that appears unwilling to act, the devotee’s plea sets in motion a story that blends mythology, social commentary and commercial cinema.
Filmfare’s review highlighted the film’s thematic ambitions, noting that its cultural foundations elevate it beyond a conventional star vehicle. An excerpt from the review of the film reads, “What gives Karuppu a distinct identity is the seriousness with which it engages with its cultural and thematic material. The invocation of Karuppasamy functions as more than visual symbolism. It becomes a metaphor for communities seeking justice when formal institutions fail them. This thematic foundation lends the film a resonance that extends beyond its commercial trappings.”
The film’s strong word-of-mouth, combined with Suriya’s star power and the novelty of its mythological premise, appears to have helped it maintain momentum well beyond its opening weekend. With collections continuing to hold steady in several territories, Karuppu has emerged as one of the actor’s most successful theatrical outings in recent years.
