Learning horse riding and sword fighting been very liberating – Samyuktha

Samyuktha talks about what drives her to be part of women’s cause in the society, women empowerment and representation of women in cinema. She shares her experience of learning horse riding and sword fighting apart from revealing how life has been as an actress in cinema.

Having done several films in all the South Indian languages in a span of nine years, Samyuktha has carved a niche for herself. She has surely become a force to reckon with and is only growing strongerA few days ago, on the occasion of Women’s Day, we saw Samyuktha backing a short film titled, Keep the Fire Alive. After learning about the video, the actress supported it by giving voice and pushing it on her social media handle. Samyuktha says one of the reasons she supported the video was because it was associated with women empowerment. “Anything that’s regarding the safety of women or the betterment or empowerment of women, I’ll always say yes to it…if their intentions are pure and constructive,” she says.

Samyuktha states that she is always in search of a higher purpose for my own life. She said, “I feel that beyond the profession that I do everything there should be something which will inspire me to go forward in life as a person.” She constantly has this thought and craving being a celeb…to make a difference in life, so she will not miss any chance to make “life all this more meaningful,” she shares, citing one of the reasons she backed the short film.

Being someone who can have that voice to speak out and will garner attention and bring visibility, Samyuktha is always game to support such causes. “You should definitely dedicate some percentage of your life to public service,” she states. She added, “I don’t want my name to be the highlight of the campaign, because as a creator, as someone who had the idea (director Prasoon) to have that highlight. Let the attention come to the content. If the content is pure, if it has a meaning, it will reach the right people. I just want to facilitate more push to it.”

Talking about women empowerment, we ask Samyuktha how the roles written for women have evolved with time and also the representation of women in cinema. The actress states that this change has been in existence earlier too. She said, “There was a stage before where a woman’s character was fused so beautifully into the stories. There were spectacular characters written with so much depth and dimension. Sridevi garu, Savitri garu, Vijay Shanti garu were seen in riveting characters, and that’s the depth of their art. Take another 20 years, we’ll still speak about them. And again, these days as content is having universal appeal, women are being given substantial roles. I feel that I’m lucky enough to be in the cinema at a time when things are drastically changing.”

She continues, “People coming forward to produce a female-centric movie, giving it, you know, good budget and good character. It’s heartening to see acceptance of female-centric movies growing with time.”

Samyuktha states that it’s also about the sensibilities of the female actors that is driving the change. In this modern age, women know what they want and they are ambitious too, she remarks. Talking about the same, she said “It’s not like the path is paved and it’s there in front of us. But few women know how to create the path for themselves, so that’s the change I’ve been seeing.”

The actress describes herself as very courageous and aspiring. Learning horse riding and sword fighting for her next film, Swayambhu is another step in that direction. “It was very liberating,” she says. She added, “I always wanted to learn different things, and I like the new stuff.  While growing up, I couldn’t get to learn a lot of things that I wanted to learn. Thanks to the cinema.”

According to her, a lot of factors that one learns on the job (cinema) makes them learn to deal with problems and be independent. “There are two ways to go about it. Either you succumb to the pressure or learn to deal with it. I’m grateful that I’m in second place,” she points out.
