Manish Malhotra recently took to Instagram to share a nostalgic glimpse into one of the most defining moments of his career—his work on the 1995 film Rangeela. The designer posted a carousel that included a rare original costume sketch from 1994, a quote from that era, and a video capturing the moment he received his first Filmfare Award for Best Costume Design.

In the post, Manish included a throwback quote that was originally featured in Filmfare magazine, where he had said, “I wasn’t just designing outfits for Rangeela – I was creating a whole look, and that’s the difference I wanted to make.” At the time, this approach was still new to Bollywood. Instead of just providing costumes for a character, Manish was building an entire visual personality, bringing in global fashion influences while staying rooted in the film’s tone and character arcs.

One of the standout elements of the post was an original hand-drawn sketch dated 1994, titled “Urmila, Rangeela Song Costume.” The sketch shows the iconic red outfit worn by Urmila Matondkar, a look that became emblematic of 90s Bollywood glam. The styling of Urmila in Rangeela was a defining fashion moment that broke away from traditional costume norms and introduced a more contemporary, expressive form of character styling in Hindi cinema.

The post also featured a video of Manish walking up to accept his first Filmfare Award for the film. That brief clip tied together everything the post represented—his journey, the creative risk he took, and the industry recognition that followed. Even today, Rangeela remains a cultural touchstone in both cinema and fashion, and Manish’s post was a heartfelt reminder of how it all began. Rangeela wasn’t just a film—it was a fashion revolution, and Manish Malhotra was at the heart of it.
