Mari Selvaraj Confirms AR Rahman for Dhanushâs D56

When filmmaker Mari Selvaraj wished AR Rahman on his birthday, fans expected warmth. What they got instead was a headline that lit up social media. In the celebratory post, Mari confirmed that the Oscar-winning composer will score his upcoming film with Dhanush, tentatively titled D56. In one simple gesture, the director revealed the creative backbone of what is shaping up to be one of the most awaited Tamil films in the pipeline.

This marks the second time Mari and Rahman are collaborating after the politically charged Maamannan in 2023. That film, which starred Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, and Udhayanidhi Stalin, showcased how Rahman’s layered, earthy score could elevate Mari’s brand of socially rooted storytelling. With D56, the duo now sets its sights on a much larger canvas. The director has already revealed that the film will be a historical drama, instantly triggering curiosity about the kind of world he plans to reconstruct.

Adding to the excitement is the reunion between Mari Selvaraj and Dhanush after Karnan in 2021. That film, set against the backdrop of caste conflict in a rural village, remains one of the actor’s most celebrated performances of the decade. Dhanush’s restrained fury and Mari’s unflinching gaze made Karnan both a commercial and critical milestone. Four years on, the pair are coming together again, this time for a period epic, promising a very different texture but the same emotional intensity.

A Composer Who Knows Dhanush’s Pulse

AR Rahman’s association with Dhanush is already a long and fruitful one. Over the years, the composer has scored for some of the actor’s most significant projects across languages, including Raanjhanaa in 2013, Maryan in the same year, Atrangi Re in 2021, and most recently Raayan in 2024. Each collaboration has explored a different shade of Dhanush, from the raw romance of Raanjhanaa to the bruised masculinity of Maryan and the stylised drama of Raayan.

With D56 being positioned as a historical drama, Rahman’s presence feels particularly apt. His ability to blend classical influences with contemporary arrangements could be key to giving the film an immersive soundscape. Whether the story is rooted in folklore, colonial history, or a forgotten chapter of Tamil heritage is still under wraps, but the composer’s involvement alone suggests a score that will aim for scale without losing soul.

The film is being produced by Dr Ishari K Ganesh under the banner of Vels Film International, a studio that has steadily built a reputation for backing ambitious projects. Mari Selvaraj has been vocal about D56 being one of his most demanding films yet, and Rahman’s inclusion only strengthens the sense that the team is assembling something special.

Mari Selvaraj and Dhanush, The Road So Far

Mari Selvaraj’s last release was Bison: Kaalamaadan, which starred Dhruv Vikram, Anupama Parameswaran, Pasupathy, and Ameer. The film continued the director’s tradition of exploring marginalised lives through a cinematic lens that is both poetic and political. Even when he steps into genre spaces like sports drama or now history, Mari’s core remains unchanged. His films are about people who fight, endure, and reclaim dignity.

For Dhanush, the past year has been nothing short of relentless. He had three releases in 2024 alone, including Nilavukku En Mel Ennadi Kobam, which he directed, Kuberaa, Idli Kadai, also as director, and the Hindi romantic drama Tere Ishk Mein. The actor shows no signs of slowing down. His next release is D54 with Vignesh Raja, which is planned for February, and he is currently working on his 55th film with Amaran director Rajkumar Periasamy.

Amidst this packed lineup, D56 stands out for what it represents. It is not just another film in Dhanush’s calendar. It is a reunion with a director who once extracted one of his finest performances, and it is a collaboration with a composer who understands how to translate his emotions into music.

Sometimes, a birthday wish can tell you more about the year ahead than any press release ever could. With Mari Selvaraj, Dhanush, and AR Rahman coming together again, D56 already feels less like a project and more like an event in the making.
