Michael Movie Review: A Visually Rich But Incomplete Biopic

Michael Movie Review – A Visually Rich But Incomplete Biopic

Michael traces the rise of Michael Jackson from his early days as a child performer to becoming a global icon who redefined pop culture. The film focuses heavily on his musical journey, iconic performances, and the larger-than-life persona that made him unforgettable.

Director Antoine Fuqua presents the story in a polished, almost dreamlike manner, where everything feels controlled and carefully curated.

Performance and Music Keep the Film Alive

One of the film’s biggest strengths is Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael. His physical resemblance, dance moves, and stage presence bring authenticity to the performance.

The musical sequences stand out as the most engaging parts of the film. They recreate iconic moments with energy and scale, reminding viewers why Michael Jackson remains one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

Where the Film Holds Back

Despite its strengths, the film noticeably avoids exploring the more complex and controversial aspects of Michael Jackson’s life. It stays within a safe narrative, focusing on success while barely touching upon struggles, allegations, or personal conflicts.

This choice makes the film feel incomplete, as it presents only one side of a deeply layered personality. Critics have pointed out that the story remains within “safe boundaries,” avoiding deeper emotional or psychological exploration.

A Biopic That Feels Carefully Controlled

The film carries a sense of restriction, as if it is more interested in protecting an image than revealing a person. While it captures the spectacle of Michael Jackson’s career, it doesn’t fully capture the contradictions that made him such a fascinating figure.

As a result, the narrative often feels like a tribute rather than an honest biography.
