West Bengal Police have detained three individuals following a complaint by actor and former politician Mimi Chakraborty. She claimed she was harassed and publicly humiliated on stage at an event held in Bongaon’s Nayagopalganj area.
The arrests were carried out on Thursday after police teams went to the residence of the prime accused, event organiser Tanay Shastri. Officials said that Shastri and two of his associates tried to obstruct the police during the visit, triggering a scuffle. The trio was subsequently taken into custody as the investigation continues.
The complaint pertains to an incident on Sunday night while Mimi Chakraborty was performing at the event. In her statement, the actor claimed she was interrupted mid-performance and asked to vacate the stage abruptly, along with being subjected to humiliating remarks. “I was invited by Naya Gopal Gunj Yubak Sango Club to perform at an event in Bongaon. Mid-performance, I was abruptly asked to leave the stage without any prior communication, in front of the audience. There were many people waiting to see me and meet me, including fans who had come for a picture. Leaving the stage that way, followed by derogatory remarks on the microphone, was not just humiliating; it defamed me publicly. I left quietly to maintain decorum. I have now taken the matter to the appropriate legal authorities and believe in due process,” she said.
After the incident, Chakraborty emailed a written complaint to the local police station. She also alleged that she was singled out for refusing an invitation to visit the organiser’s home, a courtesy extended to other artistes at the event.
The actor, who is currently promoting her recently released film Bhanupriya Bhooter Hotel, has not made any public comment on the arrests so far. In response, Tanay Shastri has rejected the allegations and described them as false and unfounded. He claimed the programme was running behind schedule because Mimi Chakraborty arrived much later than planned. “I am not at fault. Mimi arrived very late. We had to finish the event on time. That’s what we did. We did not treat Mimi badly in any way,” he said.
Police officials added that the arrests were also connected to Shastri’s alleged attempt to obstruct officers when they visited his residence. The investigation is continuing.
