Moti Sagar Backs Ranbir Kapoor As Rama Says Film Should Not Be Compared To TV Classic

The industry and fans are buzzing after the recent unveiling of the first look of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. While the teaser, released on April 2, has garnered millions of views and sparked intense discussion across social media, it has also faced a wave of scrutiny for casting choices. Amidst these mixed reactions, the project has received a nod of approval from a member of the family that defined the epic for Indian television: Moti Sagar, son of the legendary Ramanand Sagar.

Speaking about the upcoming film and Ranbir Kapoor’s role as Lord Rama, Moti Sagar expressed immense confidence in the actor’s capabilities. Describing Kapoor as a class actor, Sagar talked about the depth the star brings to his performances. Moti Sagar told PTI, “He is such a class actor and brings so much depth to his roles.” Addressing the scepticism from some sections of the audience, he added, “But you cannot judge anything from just the teaser. The actor has got so much depth in his performance. He must have gone very deep into this character. So, I would like to see the whole film and then comment. I’m expecting something very good from this film.”

Sagar also addressed the inevitable comparisons between the new big-screen adaptation and his father’s iconic 1987 television series. He pointed out that the two mediums offer vastly different storytelling scales. He mentioned that while the original Ramayana spanned 78 episodes, each running between 30 to 40 minutes, the film version must condense the epic into a three-to-four-hour runtime. He explained, “So, there will be a lot of differences, as we could go into a lot of detail in a show.”

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is being hailed as the most expensive Indian film ever made, with a reported budget of Rs 4,000 crore. Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, the film features a star-studded cast including Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman.

Ramayana is set to be released in two parts, with the first part scheduled for Diwali 2026 and the second for Diwali 2027. Despite some criticism regarding the VFX in the teaser, the sheer scale of the project continues to keep fans and industry insiders eagerly waiting for its arrival on the silver screen.
