Priyanka Chopra Jonas To Make A Special Appearance In Mira Nairâs Amrita Sher-Gil Biopic Amri ?

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is reportedly set to grace the big screen in a special new role. Reports say that she has joined the cast of Mira Nair’s biographical drama, Amri. The film is based on the life and legacy of the legendary avant-garde painter, Amrita Sher-Gil.

While the project has been moving forward quietly, the news of Priyanka’s involvement has added excitement. Although her role is described as a brief appearance, it is said to hold a meaningful place within the film’s narrative.

According to reports from Mid-Day, Amri is an ambitious project that aims to trace the journey of Sher-Gil across three different countries: Hungary, India, and France. The film will capture various important phases of the artist’s life.

A source revealed the details behind Priyanka’s casting, saying, “The film aims to present the painter’s life across Hungary, India, and France. There was a specific part for which Mira had approached Priyanka last year, and she shot for it last week.”

Priyanka managed to fit the shoot into her packed professional calendar. She reportedly travelled from Hyderabad to Amritsar, where she was busy wrapping up her work on the film Varanasi. She spent two days in Amritsar to film her specific portions for the biopic.

Interestingly, Amri marks the first professional collaboration between Priyanka and Mira Nair. While the makers have remained tight-lipped about the specific storyline and the full cast, industry insiders suggest that Priyanka’s role carries more depth than a standard cameo, providing essential weight to the story.

For those unaware with the subject of the biopic, Amrita Sher-Gil was a big name in modern Indian art. Born in Budapest to a Sikh father and a Hungarian mother, she became famous for her unique ability to blend Western oil painting techniques with Indian subject matter.

She was a prodigy who achieved international fame at a young age, becoming the only Asian artist to win a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1933. Her work often focused on the lives of women and rural communities, inspired later in her life by the Ajanta cave paintings. Though she passed away at the young age of 28, her 172 artworks were declared national treasures by the Indian government in 1976.

Apart from her appearance in Amri, Priyanka has a major release on the horizon. She will be starring in Varanasi, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, alongside Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran. It will release in theatres on April 7, 2027.
