The 2012 rom-com Cocktail remains one of the most loved films in modern Bollywood, known for its exploration of friendship, love, and heartbreak. While the film eventually starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty, it turns out the casting process was not straightforward. In a recent interview with Variety India, Saif Ali Khan revealed that many actors, including Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan, had turned down the project before he came on board.
Talking about the challenges the makers faced while assembling the cast, Saif explained that while Deepika and Diana were already finalised for the project, the production team struggled to secure a male lead. According to him, this difficulty likely came from the strength of the female lead’s character in the script.

Saif shared, “They had Deepika and Diana, but they couldn’t get a hero to play the part, probably because Veronica’s (played by Deepika) part is so delicious.” He added, “I remember some names they asked. I think they had asked Imran Khan and they had asked Ranbir Kapoor. And they had asked a few people, and I said, ‘Okay, cool, I’ll do it’.”
Talking about his decision to step into the role of Gautam, a carefree flirt, Saif expressed no regrets, adding with a touch of humour, “And I think they should all be very thankful I did. That’s my story. Yeah, because I had great fun. I love Homi. And we had a good time doing it.”

Directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Dinesh Vijan and Saif Ali Khan, Cocktail went on to achieve both critical and commercial success. Deepika Padukone’s performance as the bold and independent Veronica was widely acclaimed and is often regarded as a turning point in her career. Over the years, the film has attained cult status, supported by a popular soundtrack.
As the franchise continues with the recently released Cocktail 2, which stars Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon, the original film remains a landmark for its unique storytelling and iconic character performances.
