The 9/11 attacks were one of the most tragic events in history, and those who witnessed them were deeply affected. Shah Rukh Khan happened to be in New York at the time with his wife Gauri Khan, their son Aryan, and Karan Johar’s mother, Hiroo Johar. He later spoke about his experience while promoting My Name Is Khan, recalling how shocking and terrifying it was to be there when it happened.
That morning, he was woken up by Hiroo Johar, who pointed at the TV, showing the news. At first, he thought it was about the flight their film crew had taken to Toronto a few hours earlier, but soon he realized what was actually happening. There were journalists waiting downstairs for an interview about his film Asoka, and everyone was in shock as they watched the horrifying events unfold.
With flights cancelled and the city in chaos, Shah Rukh and his family were stuck in New York for a few days. Since he was traveling with a child and an elderly mother, people were understanding and helped them as much as they could. Eventually, they managed to get to Toronto, and from there, they flew back home. He was grateful for the kindness they received during such a difficult time.
Looking back, Shah Rukh said the experience stayed with him, just like it did for so many others. Seeing such devastation up close made him realize how fragile life is. Years later, when he made My Name Is Khan, which dealt with life after 9/11, he could relate to the emotions in the film on a much deeper level.
He said he could never forget those days of uncertainty and fear. Even though he and his family were safe, the pain and loss around him were heartbreaking. It was a time that changed the world, and he felt lucky to have made it back home with his loved ones.
