The casting grapevine surrounding Nag Ashwin’s dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2 has witnessed a major development. Following Deepika Padukone’s reported exit from the franchise last year, fans have been eager to know who will carry the narrative forward. The latest reports suggest that Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt has been approached for a pivotal role in the cinematic universe.
Alia could be a significant addition
Whether Alia is stepping into the role originally played by Deepika or portraying an entirely new character remains unclear. The actress has consistently showcased her ability to headline complex and demanding narratives through films like Gangubai Kathiawadi, Raazi, and Udta Punjab. She also left a lasting impression with her performance in the grand-scale action drama RRR.
With her upcoming spy thriller Alpha gearing up for release, joining a massive franchise like Kalki 2 could mark another major milestone in her career. Given Nag Ashwin’s distinctive vision, there is also a possibility that he has imagined Alia in a completely new futuristic character rooted in the film’s mythology.
Sai Pallavi’s parallel rumour
If Alia is indeed being considered for a new character, it leaves room for another ongoing rumour, that Ramayana actress Sai Pallavi may take over Deepika Padukone’s original role. Nag Ashwin recently addressed the speculation and urged fans to remain patient. He clarified that everything being discussed at this stage remains speculation and that official announcements will be made in due course.
The character of Sumathi holds immense importance as the emotional and mythological anchor of the franchise. As the prophesied mother of Kalki, her survival and journey drive the central conflict of the futuristic saga. Speaking to a YouTube channel recently, Nag Ashwin said that while an actor can be replaced, the character of Sumathi is too essential to the lore to be minimized or written out.
Kalki 2 recently went on floors and will also feature Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in pivotal roles.
