Stree 2 writer Niren Bhatt criticizes Bollywoodâs remake trend

Screenwriter Niren Bhatt, known for Stree 2, Munjya, and Bhediya, spoke at the 7th Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC) about Bollywood’s writing crisis. He called it both a challenge and an opportunity, stating, “The entire system is broken. So only disruptors will survive, and writers are the biggest disruptors.”

At the panel The Mainstream Reality, alongside Pathaan dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala, Kanika Dhillon, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 writer Aakash Kaushik, Niren criticized remakes. “Out of 25 remakes post-pandemic, 23 are flops. The only way to succeed is to make original content,” he said, adding, “If we keep following the same formula, we will keep failing.”

He stressed the need for change, stating, “People who are sticking to their guns, their films aren’t working. It is the best time for disruption.” Encouraging originality, he added, “A writer’s voice is their biggest strength. If you find your voice, you can give any franchise an organic extended life.”

Currently working on Thama, Stree 3, and Bhediya 2, Niren remains committed to fresh storytelling, emphasizing that originality is key to success in Bollywood.
