Prabhas’ latest release, The Raja Saab (2026), is considered a major box office failure, with reported earnings of approximately Rs 130 crore (net) against a massive Rs 400 crore budget. Despite a strong opening of over Rs 100 crore on day one, the film witnessed a drop of more than 65 percent due to poor and negative reviews. What has shocked many, however, is the film’s early arrival on OTT. We had earlier reported that the Prabhas-starrer was slated for an OTT release on February 6 via JioHotstar.
Trade caught off-guard
Reports of The Raja Saab’s early release on OTT have surprised the trade. The development has certainly caught buyers and exhibitors off-guard. Given Prabhas’ pan-India stardom, everyone expected the film to debut online only after at least two months. The horror comedy’s early arrival on OTT clearly indicates the magnitude of the losses. A four-week window period from the date of release is generally the norm for films that underperform at the box office. However, surprisingly, even a Prabhas-starrer has made it to OTT within four weeks. This development stands in stark contrast to Prabhas’ earlier film, Kalki 2898 AD. The OTT release of the Nag Ashwin directorial was delayed by a couple of months because of its magnificent theatrical run. The makers of Kalki were apprehensive that an early OTT arrival might prove counterproductive and dent theatrical revenues.
Non-availability in Hindi
What further became an interesting talking point was The Raja Saab’s availability for streaming in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, but not in Hindi. Many fans were surprised by this. The fact that the film did not have a proper Bollywood theatrical release could be one of the reasons. The makers of the horror fantasy never went hard on a Hindi release, perhaps explaining why even the OTT streaming giant is going easy on the Hindi version.
