This Iconic 1994 Love Song Was Composed In Candlelight, Director & Lyricist Couldn’t Stop Crying

In Hindi cinema, songs have never been just background entertainment. They carry the emotions of the story — love, heartbreak, longing and joy. Over the decades, many film songs have become timeless but only a few manage to touch listeners so deeply that they continue to move people even years later. One such song is “Jeeta Tha Jiske Liye, Jiske Liye Marta Tha” starring Ajay Devgn and Raveena Tandon from the 1994 film Dilwale. Even today, the song is remembered for the intense emotions it evokes.

The music of the 1990s was dominated by the legendary composer duo Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathod, popularly known as Nadeem-Shravan. Their melodies defined romance for an entire generation. Throughout the decade, they delivered one successful soundtrack after another for films like Saajan, Deewana, and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. By the mid-1990s, their music had become almost synonymous with Bollywood love stories.

Among their many memorable compositions, “Jeeta Tha Jiske Liye” track stood out for its raw emotional power. Unlike many dramatic film songs, this one felt deeply personal and painful. The lyrics were written by veteran lyricist Sameer and the soul-stirring vocals of Kumar Sanu brought the emotions to life.

Years later, Sameer shared the emotional story behind the creation of the song in an interview. According to him, the lyrics were inspired by a painful chapter from his own life. During the composition session, an unexpected power cut plunged the room into darkness. Sameer initially suggested that they postpone the recording and continue another day.

However, Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathod felt that the emotions they were experiencing at that moment were too real to ignore. Instead of stopping, they decided to continue working. In the dim light of candles, the team kept writing and composing. The intense emotions in the room began to shape the song, turning the moment into something unforgettable.

Sameer later recalled that all three of them — he, Nadeem and Shravan, were extremely emotional while creating the track. The song reflected personal heartbreak and the feelings poured directly into the lyrics and melody. They even wondered whether the audience would feel the same depth of emotion when they heard it.

To find out, the trio decided to watch the film in a theatre along with the audience after its release. When the song played on the big screen, they closely observed people’s reactions. To their surprise and relief, many viewers were visibly emotional and several had tears in their eyes. That moment convinced them that music created with genuine feelings can deeply connect with listeners.

Released in 1994, Dilwale was written by Karan Razdan and featured memorable performances. Characters like Mama Thakur, played by Paresh Rawal, and Shankar Vihari, portrayed by Gulshan Grover, became popular among audiences. Sunil Shetty also impressed viewers with his role as Inspector Vikram Singh.

Despite being made on a modest budget of around Rs 2 crore, Dilwale went on to earn about Rs 12 crore worldwide and emerged as a superhit. But beyond its box office success, the film gave Hindi cinema a song that continues to resonate across generations.

Even today, “Jeeta Tha Jiske Liye” remains a favourite on romantic playlists. From millennials who grew up with the song to Gen Z listeners discovering it now, the track still captures the universal emotions of love, loss and longing.
