The bond between Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. has always extended well beyond their time together on screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While their characters’ shared journey reached a sad end in Avengers: Endgame, which saw the death of Tony Stark, the two actors have maintained a close, off-screen friendship that involves regular check-ins and personal phone calls.
Given their strong connection, it was perhaps inevitable that when one of Hollywood’s most guarded secrets was ready to be revealed, Tom would be among the first to know. In a recent interview, he confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. personally reached out to share the news that he would be returning to the MCU, this time taking on the role of the iconic villain, Doctor Doom.
He recalled, “Yeah, he just called me. And I caught up with him a couple days ago on the phone. Yeah, we’ll just have casual catch ups every now and then. He checks in. And he just told me – and it’s really exciting.”

The news was a special moment for the duo, and Tom admitted that he couldn’t keep the revelation to himself for long. In fact, he immediately shared the update with Zendaya. He shared with a laugh, “I think I hung up the phone and was like, ‘Downey’s coming back.'” Zendaya confirmed the story, mentioning that the two were in the same room when the call came through, and he told her right away.
Keeping the secret proved to be a tough challenge for the actor. Tom, who has developed a well-known reputation for accidentally spoiling major plot points, opted to stay quiet and avoid public discussion during the lead-up to the announcement. He explained, “That was a tough secret to sit on because I have a reputation for ruining things and I strategically have done no press.”

As fans eagerly await the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the franchise, the excitement for his return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday continues to build. The film will release in cinemas in India on 18th December.
