Vignesh Shivan Reflects on LIKâs Box Office Fizzle Questions Impact of Online Negativity

Filmmaker Vignesh Shivan has shared an emotional note reflecting on the theatrical performance of his latest directorial venture, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK), which failed to meet box office expectations despite generating curiosity ahead of its release.

Taking to social media, the filmmaker revealed that he has been receiving an overwhelming number of messages from viewers who recently watched the film after its digital premiere. According to Vignesh, many of these viewers expressed regret over missing the film in theatres.

“Many people have messaged me saying they missed the film in theatres because of the overwhelming negativity they saw online,” he wrote.

The filmmaker went on to address what he believes is an increasingly influential culture of online criticism. While acknowledging the role of reviews in shaping audience opinions, Vignesh argued that some critiques appear more focused on projecting intellectual superiority than evaluating a film on its own merits.

According to him, such reviews often do more than simply assess a movie. They can discourage potential viewers from purchasing a ticket and significantly affect the prospects of a project that has taken years to develop.

‘It hurts’: Director says he is yet to accept the verdict

In his note, Vignesh admitted that he still finds it difficult to come to terms with the film’s commercial outcome. He said it was painful to watch the conversation around the film change so quickly after what appeared to be a promising start at the box office.

Reflecting on the audience response, he wrote that he believed Love Insurance Kompany was an honest attempt at delivering something different within mainstream Tamil cinema.

The filmmaker stated that a film which tried to be “different, complete, and original deserved a little more generosity from its audience.”

Vignesh also spoke about the challenges involved in bringing the ambitious project to the screen. He noted that the difficulties began long before audiences saw the final product and continued through the release process.

Recounting the hurdles faced during production and distribution, he wrote, “Making it was difficult, releasing it was even harder, and after overcoming those challenges, seeing it end this way is painful.”

Released earlier this year, Love Insurance Kompany marked Vignesh Shivan’s return to directing after Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal. The science fiction romantic comedy is set in the year 2040 and explores a future where technology has become deeply intertwined with personal relationships.

The story revolves around Suriyan, played by SJ Suryah, the creator of a revolutionary application that tracks the romantic lives of couples and allows them to insure their relationships. Trouble begins when a new feature called “love score” predicts trouble in a relationship, prompting Vibe Vassey, played by Pradeep Ranganathan, to challenge the system and fight for his future with Dheema, portrayed by Krithi Shetty.

The film featured an ensemble cast including Pradeep Ranganathan, Krithi Shetty and SJ Suryah in lead roles, with Gouri Kishan, Yogi Babu, Seeman, Shah Ra, Malavika, Mysskin, Anandaraj and Sunil Reddy appearing in supporting parts.

While the film struggled during its theatrical run, the response following its OTT release appears to have sparked fresh conversations around the project, with Vignesh now highlighting the gap between initial critical reception and the opinions being shared by viewers discovering the film at home.
