According to the latest reports, the movie secured over Rs. 100 crore first-day worldwide gross, and crossing Rs. 50 crores in sales in India. Thus, Buchi Babu Sana’s sports drama can be said to have made a phenomenal debut, surpassing even Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan’s opening day collection. Regarding Peddi, it is a biographical film featuring Ram Charan, Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Boman Irani, and Divyenndu as the primary cast.
Speaking of Peddi‘s plotline, the Telugu sports action drama focuses on a multi-talented athlete who utilises his expertise in sports to fight for identity, dignity, and legal recognition of his forgotten village. It is set in the 1980s in a remote, marginalised tribal village called Kondakinda Ooru, located in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. They are completely barred from basic rights like official government records and voting rights. Amid that, rises athlete Peddi, who vows to win competitive athletics to bring visibility to the village.
Who is the real-life inspiration behind Ram Charan’s Peddi?
The real-life inspiration behind Ram Charan‘s titular character in the movie, Peddi is a young man named Peddi Raju. He was a local boy who reportedly hailed from the hometown of the film’s director, Buchi Babu Sana. He belonged to a financially disadvantaged family and worked as a daily-wage labourer at local construction sites to support them. Besides being a wageworker, Peddi Raju had another side to him. He possessed exceptional natural, untrained talent in sports like cricket and basketball. According to the director, Peddi Raju could single-handedly win matches, and the locals would often pay him to skip his manual labour jobs so that he could play for their village teams.
