When the cast and crew of Rang De Basanti reunited in Mumbai to mark 20 years of the iconic film, the evening turned into an emotional celebration of a story that defined a generation. Aamir Khan, Soha Ali Khan and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra were among those who attended the special screening. They posed for photographs, interacted with fans and reminisced about the film’s journey over the years. Videos and pictures from the gathering quickly made their way online, with many calling it a full-circle moment. However, one face was noticeably missing, R Madhavan.
Madhavan, who played Flight Lieutenant Ajay Rathod in the 2006 classic, later addressed his absence and shared why he couldn’t be present for the milestone event. “I was at a shoot overseas when the event happened, and I couldn’t fly back in time,” he said, admitting that he would have liked to reunite with the team for such a special occasion.
He also revealed that the reunion had originally been planned earlier but was postponed following a tragic plane crash in Baramati, Maharashtra, which claimed several lives, including that of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. “We didn’t feel it was right to celebrate at that time. It was a very heartbreaking incident,” he explained, adding that the team collectively decided to delay the event out of respect.
Released in 2006, Rang De Basanti went on to become one of the most influential films of its time. With its themes of youth unrest, patriotism and political awakening, the film struck a powerful chord across the country. Madhavan’s portrayal of Ajay Rathod, an Air Force officer whose death becomes a turning point in the narrative, remains one of the film’s most moving and impactful moments.
Even after two decades, the film continues to resonate with audiences and holds a lasting place in popular culture.
