Why Zendaya and Robert Pattinsonâs The Drama Holds High Stakes

The wedding of the year is almost here, have you RSVP’d yet?

Kristoffer Borgli’s The Drama, headlined by Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has been the talk of Tinseltown for a while now. At first glance, it promises a classic love story. Emma Harwood, a bookstore clerk, and Charlie Thompson, a British museum director, are a happily engaged couple all set for their wedding. But beneath this seemingly perfect romance lies an unsettling truth that threatens to spiral everything into chaos.

The trailer initially draws you into a tender, youthful romance. Emma and Charlie discuss their wedding speeches against the haunting tune of All I Can Say by Kali Uchis. However, halfway through, a seemingly harmless confession game, “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?”, derails the narrative. While others laugh off their admissions, Emma’s confession sends shockwaves through the group. What follows is a cascade of tense and dark confrontations: a sharp slap, Charlie’s abrupt withdrawal from his wedding speech, an awkward photo session, and more fleeting glimpses of emotional turmoil.

The film has already sparked intense online chatter, with many calling it a raw exploration of unsettling truths within relationships. Ambiguity serves as its biggest hook, with fan theories flooding social media. Did Emma get cold feet? Was there betrayal? Or something far darker? The answers remain tantalisingly out of reach.

Adding to the intrigue is the first-time pairing of Zendaya and Pattinson, two of the most compelling actors in contemporary pop culture. The duo will also be seen together in Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey, both high-stakes projects in their own right. However, The Drama stands apart, steering away from spectacle-driven storytelling to offer something far more intimate, eerie, and emotionally raw.

Critics are already dubbing 2026 as the “year of Z.” Following her breakthrough in Euphoria, Zendaya’s upcoming slate, including Dune: Part Three, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and The Odyssey, cements her position at the peak of her career. Pattinson, too, continues to gravitate toward layered, complex roles, building on the legacy of films like The Batman and the Twilight franchise. Together, their collaboration in a tragic love story raises expectations significantly.

A major contributor to the film’s buzz is the ingenious marketing by A24. The studio kickstarted the campaign with a faux engagement announcement for Emma and Charlie in the Boston Globe, presenting it as a real-life event. This was followed by wedding-themed posters urging audiences to “Save The Date,” and even a fully functional wedding website launched on Valentine’s Day. Framed as a digital registry, the site allows users to RSVP, browse polaroids, check dress codes, and explore an “Our Story” timeline of the fictional couple.

Adding another layer to the campaign was Zendaya’s fashion narrative. She embraced the classic wedding adage, “something old, something new, something borrowed”, through her promotional appearances. Her “something old” was a vintage Vivienne Westwood dress previously worn at the Oscars. Her “something new” came in the form of a custom Louis Vuitton gown, while her “something borrowed” was an Armani Privé look originally worn by Cate Blanchett. The strategy sparked widespread curiosity, with fans eagerly speculating about her “something blue.”

By blurring the lines between fiction and reality, the makers have created an immersive experience that pulls audiences into Emma and Charlie’s world. It’s a clever, layered campaign that has amplified intrigue and word-of-mouth in equal measure.

As Emma and Charlie’s big day approaches, one thing is certain, this is no ordinary wedding.
