Telangana Womens Commission warns of legal action against Telugu songs that belittle women

The Telangana State Women’s Commission has issued a warning against certain songs in Tollywood that are ‘objectionable’ and ‘derogatory’ to watch. Namely, Sitar Song, Dabidi Dibidi and Adhi Dha Surprisu recently faced backlash for controversial dance moves. Sharada Nerella, Chairman of the Telangana State Women’s Commission, issued a press note on Thursday, stating that the commission has received complaints from viewers about the steps. The press note stated that the “dance steps in some songs are vulgar and demeaning to women.” It also noted that the issue is a “grave concern” as cinema is an impactful and powerful medium.

The press release further called for action while asking the makers to stop engaging with songs and dance steps that “belittle women”. “In this context, the Women’s Commission is warning film directors, producers, choreographers and related groups to act responsibly. Indecent dance steps that belittle women should be stopped immediately. If this warning is not heeded, we are ready to take strict action under the relevant laws,” read a part of the press note.

Opening up on the film industry’s moral responsibility towards the audience, the Commission stated, “The film industry has a moral responsibility to provide positive messages to society and protect the dignity of women. Keeping in mind the impact of showing films on youth and children, the film industry needs to exercise self-regulation.”

The note urged the concerned people to “take further action” and work with the Commission to ensure decency. “People and social organizations can express their views on this issue to the Women’s Commission. We will continue to closely monitor this issue and take further necessary steps,” the note stated.
