Emerald Fennell on what made Margot Robbie the perfect choice for Wuthering Heights

Filmmaker Emerald Fennell has opened up about casting Margot Robbie as Cathy in her reimagining of Wuthering Heights, shedding light on what the actor brings to one of literature’s most complex heroines. Backed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film presents a striking interpretation of Emily Brontë’s classic tale, exploring passion, obsession and emotional volatility through its central relationship.

Starring Robbie alongside Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, the project revisits the iconic love story through a contemporary lens while retaining its intensity. Reflecting on her casting choice, Fennell said, Margot is absolutely extraordinary. The thing about casting is finding the root of this person… and how can that be used and subverted in an interesting way as this character? She described Cathy as belonging to the lineage of vivid literary figures, spoiled, capricious and fiercely magnetic, explaining,“She’s deeply feeling, funny, her emotions are gigantic… Cathy likes to hurt people, she enjoys pushing to see how far she can get away with something and still be forgiven.

According to the director, Robbie’s screen presence captures this tension between allure and danger. “Margot is able to encapsulate all of this,” Fennell noted, adding that Cathy required ;someone with their own dangerous, life-ruining beauty and charisma.”She recalled the actor’s instinctive connection with the role, saying, “The moment Margot first read Cathy’s words you immediately understood who this person was, and why everyone around her would forgive her anything.

Fennell further emphasised Robbie’s layered performance, describing her as “deeply talented… deeply feeling… clever… powerful, if she wanted to she could be scary.&rdquoThe interpretation balances vanity, vulnerability and passion, anchored in Cathy’s consuming bond with Heathcliff.
