NTA (The National Testing Agency) has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination after allegations of a large-scale paper leak triggered outrage across India. The decision came after days of protests, political pressure, and investigations that raised serious concerns over the integrity of one of the country’s biggest medical entrance exams.
The NEET UG exam was conducted on May 3 for more than 22 lakh medical aspirants seeking admission into MBBS and other medical courses across India. However, reports of leaked “guess papers” matching actual exam questions soon began circulating online, creating panic among students and parents.
How The Controversy Exploded
According to multiple reports, investigators discovered that several questions from a so-called “guess paper” circulating before the exam closely matched the actual NEET paper. Authorities in Rajasthan reportedly found that over 100 questions had significant similarities with the final exam.
The Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) launched an investigation after suspicious material began spreading among students weeks before the examination. The probe later expanded to other states as more evidence emerged.
Officials reportedly detained multiple suspects while investigating possible links between coaching networks, middlemen, and exam-related leaks.
NTA Announces Re-Exam
Facing mounting pressure and nationwide anger, the NTA announced on May 12 that NEET UG 2026 would be cancelled entirely and conducted again on fresh dates to be announced later.
The agency stated that the decision was taken to ensure fairness and transparency in the examination process after receiving inputs from central investigative agencies. Existing registrations will reportedly remain valid for the re-exam, and students will not need to pay additional fees.
CBI Probe Ordered
The controversy has now escalated into a major national issue after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was asked to conduct a comprehensive probe into the alleged leak.
Opposition leaders sharply criticized the government following the cancellation. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed students’ futures were being destroyed by corruption and administrative failures, while several student groups demanded accountability from the authorities involved.
Students Left Frustrated And Exhausted
For lakhs of NEET aspirants, the cancellation has created emotional stress and uncertainty. Many students described the situation as mentally exhausting after spending years preparing for the highly competitive exam.
Several candidates speaking to media outlets said they felt “betrayed” by the system and questioned why repeated exam leak controversies continue affecting students across India.
Parents and education experts have also raised concerns about the growing pattern of paper leaks in major national examinations, including recruitment tests and entrance exams conducted over the past few years.
Bigger Questions Around India’s Exam System
The NEET controversy has once again reignited debate around the security and reliability of India’s competitive examination system. Experts believe the combination of massive competition, coaching industry pressure, and weak safeguards has made major exams increasingly vulnerable to leaks and organized fraud networks.
With the CBI now involved and fresh exam dates still pending, lakhs of students remain stuck in uncertainty while waiting for clarity on the future of NEET UG 2026.
