The countdown has begun for Pluto. The upcoming Malayalam science fiction comedy starring Neeraj Madhav is all set to arrive in cinemas on July 30. The makers announced the release date on social media on Friday, while also unveiling a fresh poster featuring the film’s principal cast, offering another glimpse into what promises to be an offbeat entertainer.
Directed by Adithyan Chandrashekar, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2023 romantic comedy Enkilum Chandrike, Pluto blends science fiction with comedy, a combination Malayalam cinema has explored only sparingly in recent years. Scripted by Niyas Muhammed, the film features Althaf Salim as an alien, with Mukundan Unni Associates-fame Arsha Chandini Baiju, Aju Varghese, Dinesh Prabhakar, Subin SB and Vineeth Thattil David playing key roles alongside Neeraj Madhav.
The newly released poster highlights the ensemble nature of the film, teasing a colourful cast of characters and hinting at the quirky tone that the makers have promised from the outset.
Behind the camera, Pluto boasts a seasoned technical crew. Vishnu Sarma serves as cinematographer, Sanath Sivaraj handles editing, and Arcado has composed the music. The film is produced by Reju Kumar and Resmi Reju under the Orchid Films International banner, with Jayakrishnan RK serving as executive producer.
Adithyan Chandrashekar’s next after Enkilum Chandrike
Pluto marks Adithyan Chandrashekar’s sophomore directorial after Enkilum Chandrike, the 2023 romantic comedy that introduced him as a filmmaker with a flair for lighthearted storytelling. With Pluto, he shifts gears into science fiction while retaining a comic flavour, making it one of the more unusual Malayalam releases of the year.
Neeraj Madhav was last seen in the JioHotstar series Love Under Construction, while Althaf Salim’s latest outing was Secret of Kalinga, starring Dhyan Sreenivasan. Both actors now headline a film that hopes to put a distinctly local spin on the alien comedy genre.
Adithyan also has another ambitious project in the pipeline. He is set to direct Nivin Pauly in the fantasy entertainer Multiverse Manmadhan, which is currently in pre-production under the banner of Pauly Jr Pictures.
With its blend of science fiction, comedy and an ensemble cast packed with familiar faces, Pluto is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing Malayalam releases this month. Audiences will find out whether its unusual premise lands when the film arrives in theatres on July 30.
