SS Rajamouli Unveils Priyanka Chopra Jonas As Mandakini in Varanasi on Her Birthday

SS Rajamouli has given fans a birthday surprise by unveiling Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ first look from his much-awaited film Varanasi. On the actress’ 44th birthday, the filmmaker introduced her character, Mandakini, through two striking stills that instantly sparked conversation across social media. The reveal also marks the audience’s first official glimpse of Priyanka in the film, which has been one of Indian cinema’s most closely guarded productions.

Sharing the images online, Rajamouli accompanied them with a simple yet evocative caption: “Grace when she smiles. Fire when she doesn’t. Mandakini…”

The two visuals present contrasting shades of the character, suggesting that Mandakini will be one of the central forces driving the story. While Rajamouli has remained tight-lipped about the plot, the images hint at a character who balances elegance with formidable strength.

Two looks, one enigmatic character

The first still showcases Priyanka in a dramatic black corset-inspired ensemble paired with a textured updo. Bathed in warm amber lighting, she looks directly into the camera with a piercing expression that exudes confidence and intensity. The image carries the signature visual grandeur that has become synonymous with Rajamouli’s cinema and immediately positions Mandakini as a commanding presence.

The second image shifts gears completely. Captured against the sweeping landscapes of Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Priyanka appears suspended midair with her arms spread wide. Dressed in a white crop top, black cargo trousers and a beige jacket, she radiates a sense of freedom and adventure. The backdrop also reinforces long-standing reports that Varanasi has been mounted as an international action-adventure spanning multiple countries and timelines.

The reveal has only fuelled speculation about the scale of the film, with fans dissecting every detail from the costumes to the locations. Rajamouli’s projects are known for blending larger-than-life spectacle with emotionally driven characters, and Mandakini appears to fit seamlessly into that tradition.

Priyanka opens up about Rajamouli’s ambitious vision

The film is particularly significant for Priyanka Chopra Jonas as it marks her return to Indian cinema after The Sky Is Pink, which released in 2019. Since then, she has largely focused on international projects including Citadel, Love Again and Heads of State, making Varanasi one of the most anticipated chapters of her career.

Speaking recently on the Hey Jonas podcast, Priyanka offered a rare glimpse into the filmmaking process behind Rajamouli’s latest spectacle.

She said, “I have been working on it for about 14 months now. SS Rajamouli is known to take that kind of time to make movies. He called me for this movie, and it’s this epic adventure around the world and in time… I do so many amazing slow-motion jumps in it, and that’s all I can say.”

The actress’ comments align with Rajamouli’s reputation for crafting expansive cinematic worlds. Following the global success of Baahubali and RRR, expectations surrounding Varanasi are understandably immense. The filmmaker has reportedly shot across multiple international locations, with a significant portion of the action sequences already completed.

Mahesh Babu headlines the film in what is being described as one of the biggest projects of his career, while Prithviraj Sukumaran also plays a pivotal role. Although the makers continue to keep story details under wraps, industry insiders believe the film blends mythology, history and adventure into a globe-trotting narrative.

With Priyanka Chopra Jonas finally stepping into the spotlight as Mandakini, Varanasi has taken another major step towards its highly anticipated release. If the first look is any indication, Rajamouli is preparing yet another cinematic spectacle that aims to resonate with audiences far beyond Indian shores. The film is currently slated for a worldwide theatrical release in August 2027.
