Director Rupert Wyatt’s historical drama Desert Warrior, which had a theatrical release in 2025, made its OTT debut on July 17. Starring Anthony Mackie, Aiysha Hart, Sharlto Copley and Ben Kingsley, the film follows an Arabian princess who joins forces with a bandit to take on a ruthless emperor after refusing to become his concubine. The film is inspired by real events and the culture of 7th-century Arabia.
Speaking about balancing historical authenticity with creative storytelling, Wyatt reflected on the liberties that come with bringing a story from the 7th century to the screen.
He said, “Creative license should be invisible. Our story is set in 607AD so one has to feel like you’re leaning into a time machine of storytelling. I’m sure if you ask seven different historians how it was in 607AD you’d get seven different versions, and particularly this story where nothing was really written down – it was passed down through poetry and oral tradition. There are so many different perceptions and notions of this, and they all serve different regions’ purposes on a political level.”
He went on to explain that despite its historical backdrop, the film is rooted in a timeless narrative that audiences across generations can relate to.
“But, at the end of the day, it’s a story, the classic ‘rage against the machine’ story. If one can find a totally organic way of telling that story, but you’re also bringing the world of Mad Max into it, or you’re bringing Braveheart aspects of the single individual fighting against all odds, you could be making a story set in 2022, and you’re doing the same thing.”
Desert Warrior is now streaming on Lionsgate Play.
