Sarah Mallory Geis, a 39-year-old mountaineer from San Antonio, Texas, left behind a successful Pilates studio earlier this year to pursue her lifelong dream of high-altitude climbing. Her first attempt at an 8,000-meter peak ended in tragedy when she was among the climbers killed in the devastating Broad Peak avalanche that also claimed the life of legendary mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja. As tributes pour in, Geis’ final Instagram posts have resurfaced.

Geis was part of a 10-member international expedition attempting to summit Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. The summit, standing at 8,051 meters in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, was Geis’ first attempt at climbing one of the world’s 14 “eight-thousanders.” Before departing, she excitedly shared that she was heading to Pakistan for her “first big kid climbing expedition.” She wrote:
“Let’s see if we can get this body and these boots up Broad Peak.”
