Former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson, 31, died on August 23, 2026, while serving his 20-year prison sentence. He was convicted in October 2025 of second-degree murder for the July 6, 2024, fatal shooting of Sonya Massey in her Springfield home after she called 911 about a prowler. For the unversed, Sonya was 36 years old at the time of her death.
Notably, Sean Grayson received the maximum sentence on January 29, 2026. Although he sought medical release in May 2026, citing advanced colon cancer, his request was denied.
