Hanuman Ansh has gone from a film that many were unsure would even make it to the screen to one of the biggest box-office surprises of 2026. Made on a reported budget of around Rs 2 crore, Vishal Chaturvedi’s devotional drama has now crossed the Rs 150 crore mark at the Indian box office.
Based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba, Hanuman Ansh stars Shobhinaw Satyaa as the revered spiritual leader. But Satyaa was never supposed to be the film’s lead. He had joined the project as an assistant director. When the actor who was originally cast as Neem Karoli Baba suddenly fell seriously ill, there was a risk of the film being shelved. That’s when Chaturvedi asked Satyaa to audition for the central role.

The casting crisis was only one of the hurdles the film faced. Production itself was so uncertain that several members of the cast and crew eventually walked away, convinced that the film might not even reach its shooting location in Chitrakoot. Satyaa recalled being the “last person standing” at one point, as doubts mounted over whether the film would actually go on the floors. The team ultimately managed to get to Chitrakoot by train and begin the shoot. The spiritually significant town, associated with the Ramayana and situated along the Mandakini River, provided the setting for some of the film’s crucial moments.
Satyaa also had his own doubts about stepping into the role. He wondered whether audiences would accept him as Neem Karoli Baba. He also worried about how followers of the spiritual leader would respond to his portrayal.
Hanuman Ansh’s Box Office Journey
Hanuman Ansh opened on August 7 to just Rs 10 lakh on Day 1 and was initially playing on a limited number of screens. But strong word of mouth steadily changed its fortunes, with exhibitors adding shows as the film continued to find an audience. By its fifth week, it was still pulling in substantial numbers, taking its India gross beyond Rs 150 crore.
On a reported Rs 2 crore production budget, the film has therefore generated a return many times its original investment. After a month, the film has crossed Rs 150 crore, amounting to roughly 78 times the reported production cost. That reportedly makes it one of the most profitable Indian films.
