Danish Pandor isn’t wasting any time riding his Dhurandhar high. The actor, who made a striking impression as Pakistani gangster Uzair Baloch in Aditya Dhar’s franchise, has now signed on for a pivotal role in Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lalkaara. And going by the buzz, this could be the project that really puts him on the map.
Lalkaara marks Aamir and Gowariker’s first major collaboration since Lagaan, and expectations are already sky high. The film is an ambitious period sports drama built around the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series, exploring themes of friendship, rivalry and national pride against the backdrop of post-Partition India. Aamir plays Lala Amarnath, independent India’s first Test cricket captain, and reports suggest Danish will play one of his friends in the film, though the exact character details are being kept tightly under wraps for now.

What’s interesting is the physical commitment this role clearly demands. Aamir, Danish and co-star are reportedly training in cricket and undergoing significant physical transformation to convincingly play their real-life-based characters. Aamir himself has reportedly begun a major weight-loss programme, since his character is meant to be around 25, quite a leap from the actor’s actual age. That’s the kind of dedication Aamir is known for, and it looks like his co-stars are matching that intensity too.
Vikrant Massey, who was earlier linked to the project, is reportedly no longer part of it, which makes Danish’s casting even more significant within the ensemble now taking shape. The film is written by Piyush Gupta, known for Dangal and Chhichhore, along with Neeraj Singh of Nil Battey Sannata fame, and is expected to go on floors soon with more names likely to be added to the cast.

For Danish, this is a massive step up. Going from a breakout villain in one of the year’s biggest franchises to a key role in a Gowariker-Khan reunion isn’t a small jump, it’s a statement. If Lalkaara delivers even half the impact Lagaan did, Danish might just be looking at the biggest year of his career yet.
