Anurag Kashyap To Play A Social Media Influencer In Sam Antons Unkill_123

Anurag Kashyap is set to take on a rather unconventional role in his upcoming Tamil film Unkill_123. On the occasion of the filmmaker-actor’s birthday this Friday, the film’s producer Vels Film International shared a special wish for him, while also teasing audiences about his yet-to-be-seen avatar in the psychological thriller.

Vels Film International wrote, “Wishing the legendary director and actor Anurag Kashyap a very Happy BIrthday! Get ready to see a whole new avatar of him in our upcoming film Unkill_123! Wishing him a year filled with grand blockbusters and unforgettable role!”

The birthday post has added to the curiosity surrounding Unkill_123, which brings Anurag into a story centred on social media fame, obsession and its psychological consequences. The actor is said to play a common man whose desire to gain popularity online gradually takes over his life. What begins as an attempt to become a social media influencer eventually develops into an unhealthy obsession, taking the character into increasingly troubled territory.

Anurag Kashyap steps into the world of online fame

Directed by Sam Anton, Unkill_123 is based on a script written by the filmmaker along with Savari Muthu. The film is produced by Ishari K Ganesh under the Vels Film International banner and has been described as a gripping psychological thriller examining how the pursuit of online popularity can fundamentally alter a person’s life and state of mind.

The premise taps into an increasingly familiar aspect of contemporary life. Social media has created an ecosystem where ordinary individuals can become influencers and build substantial audiences almost overnight. However, the film intends to look beyond the apparent glamour of that transformation and explore what happens when validation from an online audience becomes central to a person’s sense of self.

Sangitha is also part of the cast, although details about her character and her relationship with Anurag’s protagonist have not been revealed. The makers have otherwise kept the narrative closely guarded, leaving the actor’s “whole new avatar” as one of the film’s key talking points.

The darker side of the digital world

The official plotline of Unkill_123 promises to examine the emotional and psychological impact of constantly trying to remain relevant in the digital space. “It shows how the pressure to stay popular can lead to emotional stress, loneliness, and a loss of identity reflecting the darker side of today’s digital world. The film captures the growing influence of social media in everyday life and the unseen battles behind the filtered smiles where validation, envy, and insecurity collide.”

Producer Ishari Ganesh had previously elaborated on the idea behind the film, saying, “We have all witnessed the rise of influencers who became stars through social media. But very few talk about the emotional cost of that fame, the loneliness, the comparison, and the psychological strain behind the screens. Unkill_123 is a story that captures both the glamour and the pain of this new-age fame culture.”

The technical team includes composer Jerard Felix, cinematographer Krishnan Vasant and editor Naash. With its focus on the psychological impact of social media and Anurag playing a man caught in the pursuit of digital recognition, the film promises to present the actor in an unusual setting.

Anurag has previously made appearances in several Tamil projects, and his most recent outing in the language was a cameo in Vetri Maaran’s Viduthalai Part 2, which starred Vijay Sethupathi, Soori and Manju Warrier. He will also be seen in the long-delayed One 2 One, directed by K Thirugnanam and co-starring Sundar C.

With Unkill_123, however, Anurag appears to be taking on a far more central role. The film’s exploration of influencer culture, coupled with his character’s descent from ordinary social media user to fame-obsessed personality, sets the stage for a potentially intriguing psychological thriller.
