AR Rahman Announces Autobiography Titled Rahman: A Renaissance

AR Rahman is turning the pages of his extraordinary life and career into a book. The celebrated composer recently took to social media to announce his upcoming autobiography, titled Rahman: A Renaissance. The book will be co-authored by writer Rupa Chakravarty and is expected to offer readers a closer look at the experiences and ideas that have shaped one of Indian cinema’s most influential musical voices.

Sharing the news on social media, Rahman wrote, “A new chapter begins. Rupa Chakravarty and I come together as co-authors for Rahman: A Renaissance. The book offers a closer look at the music, ideas, challenges, influences and creative journey that have shaped my world. More details will follow soon.”

While details about the book’s release and contents are yet to be announced, the title suggests that the publication will look beyond Rahman’s achievements to explore the many phases of his creative life. From his early days as a musician and composer to becoming a global name, Rahman’s journey has been marked by several defining milestones.

From Roja to a global phenomenon

Rahman’s association with cinema began before he became a household name. In the early stages of his career, he worked with several established composers, including the legendary Ilaiyaraaja. His major breakthrough came with Mani Ratnam’s Roja in 1992, which marked his full-fledged debut as a film composer.

The music of Roja became an important moment in Indian film music, with Rahman bringing together electronic sounds, traditional influences and contemporary arrangements in a manner that immediately distinguished his work. The success of the album also marked the beginning of a long-standing creative partnership between Rahman and Mani Ratnam.

Their collaboration has continued across several projects over the years, including Bombay, Dil Se.., Yuva, Guru, Kadal and O Kadhal Kanmani, among others. Their association has produced some of the most memorable soundtracks in Indian cinema, making it one of the enduring filmmaker-composer partnerships in the industry.

A career shaped by music and reinvention

Over the decades, Rahman has built a career that extends well beyond Indian cinema. His work has earned him multiple National Film Awards and several other major honours, while his music has taken him to some of the biggest international stages.

His global recognition reached another level with Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman won two Academy Awards for the film, for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Jai Ho”, sharing the latter award with lyricist Gulzar. He also became a recipient of Golden Globe and Grammy Awards, further cementing his position as an internationally acclaimed composer.

Rahman: A Renaissance now promises to explore the journey behind those accomplishments, including the influences, challenges and creative decisions that shaped his career. For fans who have followed his music from Roja to his international projects, the autobiography could offer an intimate perspective on the man behind some of Indian cinema’s most celebrated soundscapes.

With Rahman himself describing the book as a closer look at the world that has shaped his music and ideas, Rahman: A Renaissance is already an intriguing addition to the composer’s remarkable legacy. More details about the book are expected to be revealed soon.
