Kris Thirukumaran’s return to action drama
Retta Thala marks the latest chapter in director Kris Thirukumaran’s uneven but interesting career. He made a splash with Maan Karate in 2014, a Sivakarthikeyan sports comedy that became a crowd pleaser. He followed it up with Gethu in 2016, starring Udhayanidhi Stalin, Amy Jackson, and Sathyaraj, a slick thriller that leaned into mood and style.
Before stepping into the director’s chair, Kris cut his teeth as an assistant to AR Murugadoss on blockbuster projects like Gajini, Ezham Arivu, Thuppakki, and Sarkar. That grounding in high concept commercial cinema is evident here as well. Retta Thala is built on a star driven hook and an idea that thrives on dramatic reversals, even when the writing does not always land with the punch it aims for.
A cast and crew that aim big
Backing Arun Vijay is a solid ensemble. Tanya Ravichandran plays the female lead, anchoring the emotional core of Kaali’s life. Kannada actor Yogesh makes his Tamil debut as Malpe Upendra, holding his own opposite a more familiar Tamil star. The supporting cast features reliable performers like John Vijay, Hareesh Peradi, and Balaji Murugadoss, who add texture to the film’s shifting loyalties and power games.
On the technical front, the film boasts a strong lineup. Sam CS brings his trademark intensity to the background score, while Tijo Tomy’s cinematography gives the film a gritty, kinetic sheen. Anthony’s editing keeps the narrative moving at a brisk clip, and the action is shaped by stunt duo Anbariv, whose choreography ensures that the confrontations between Kaali and his shadow self, land with physical impact.
With its arrival on Prime Video, Retta Thala now gets the chance to be discovered beyond box office verdicts. For fans of Arun Vijay and for viewers who enjoy identity based thrillers, this double-edged drama might just play better at home than it did in packed theatres.
