Bipasha Basu is all set to return to acting with Hansal Mehta’s upcoming crime thriller Barabanki. The actor has reportedly begun shooting for the series in Mumbai, marking her first major screen outing in several years.
Based on retired IPS officer Aloke Lal’s book The Barabanki Narcos: Busting India’s Most Notorious Drug Cartel, the series is inspired by a real-life operation to dismantle a powerful opium cartel in Uttar Pradesh. Set in 1984, the story follows Lal as he leads a large-scale operation against the drug trade in Barabanki district.
According to a report by Mid-Day, Bipasha started filming for Barabanki in Mumbai last month. The series marks her first collaboration with filmmaker Hansal Mehta and comes nearly six years after her OTT debut with the 2020 thriller Dangerous.
The crime drama also stars Sunny Kaushal and Vishal Jethwa in pivotal roles. However, details about their characters, as well as Bipasha’s role, are currently being kept under wraps. The report suggests that Bipasha’s character shares a deep personal connection with the central protagonist and plays an important part in the narrative.
Bipasha reportedly gave an immediate nod to the project after Hansal Mehta approached her with the story. The filmmaker was also said to be on the actor’s wish list, making the collaboration particularly special.
Adding to the anticipation, Bipasha will reportedly be seen in a completely distinct look in Barabanki, one that is said to be unlike her previous on-screen appearances. With its real-life inspiration, gritty subject and an ensemble cast, the series marks a notable new chapter in Bipasha’s acting journey.
Basu is returning to acting after a prolonged break following the birth of her daughter, Devi in 2022. Her last feature film was Alone (2015), while her most recent screen appearance was in the 2020 OTT thriller Dangerous. Since then, she has largely stayed away from acting while remaining active on social media.
