Christopher Nolan has credited SS Rajamouli’s RRR for helping Indian cinema break into the US market. During his recent visit to India to promote The Odyssey, the Oscar-winning filmmaker reflected on the growing global reach of Indian films, pointing to RRR as a landmark success in Western markets.
Speaking in a recent interview, Nolan said films like RRR have shown that Indian cinema can find a significant audience overseas when conventional distribution barriers are overcome. “The American market is very large for cinema. The US market alone accounts for half of the total market. Breaking into it and other Western markets will open up all kinds of possibilities for filmmakers,” he said.

The official RRR social media handle acknowledged Nolan’s remarks, writing, “Hearing Christopher Nolan speak about Indian cinema and RRR is a moment we will cherish beyond words. From one storyteller’s universe to another… thank you, sir.”
RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan, has enjoyed an extraordinary international journey since its release. The film became a global phenomenon, earning widespread acclaim, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, and introducing Indian commercial cinema to a broader international audience.
Nolan is not the first Hollywood heavyweight to praise RRR. Steven Spielberg previously described the film as “pure cinematic joy,” calling it “outstanding” and saying, “I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like eye candy… it was extraordinary to look at and experience.”
James Cameron, meanwhile, revealed that he watched the film twice before meeting Rajamouli at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Discussing the screenplay, Cameron praised its narrative structure, saying, “The setup… Your fire, water story. Reveal after reveal. And then you show what happened in the backstory… the twists and turns and the friendship… It’s just so, so powerful.” He also famously told Rajamouli, “If you ever wanna make a movie over here, let’s talk.”
With appreciation from some of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers, RRR continues to be regarded as a milestone that expanded the global footprint of Indian cinema and demonstrated its potential to connect with audiences well beyond its home market.
