Dhanushs Om: Chapter 1 Gets Bigger As Naseeruddin Shah Joins The Star-studded Cast

Dhanush and director Rajkumar Periasamy are steadily assembling one of the most exciting ensembles in Indian cinema. Just days after unveiling the official title, Om: Chapter 1, along with its release date, the makers have now revealed another major addition to the film. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has officially come on board, further raising anticipation for the ambitious multilingual action drama.

The announcement strengthens an already formidable cast led by Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela. Malayalam actor Indrans is also set to play a pivotal role, making Om one of the most talent-packed films currently in production. Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, whose last outing Amaran emerged as both a critical and commercial success, the film is slated to hit theatres on October 16 and marks the filmmaker’s first collaboration with Dhanush.

For Naseeruddin Shah, Om marks a long-awaited return to Tamil cinema. The celebrated actor has appeared in only one Tamil film before, Kamal Haasan’s ambitious bilingual Hey Ram (2000), where he portrayed Mahatma Gandhi. Interestingly, the film also marked Shah Rukh Khan’s Tamil debut. Twenty six years later, Shah is set to return to the industry with a project that has already generated considerable buzz.

A reunion, a Tamil comeback, and a cast that keeps getting stronger

The casting also sets up an exciting reunion between two acting powerhouses. Naseeruddin Shah and Mammootty previously shared screen space in the acclaimed Malayalam classic Ponthan Mada, directed by T.V. Chandran. Released in 1994, the film remains one of the most celebrated collaborations in Indian cinema, and Om will bring the two veterans together again 32 years later.

The film also continues several notable creative reunions. Rajkumar Periasamy reunites with Sai Pallavi after the blockbuster success of Amaran, where she portrayed Indhu Rebecca Varghese opposite Sivakarthikeyan’s Major Mukund Varadarajan. Dhanush, meanwhile, teams up once again with Sai Pallavi after their chemistry in Maari 2, while Mammootty returns to Tamil cinema for the first time since his acclaimed performance in Peranbu.

Although the makers are keeping the plot tightly under wraps, the recently released title teaser hinted at a gritty world driven by conflict, political unrest and large scale action. Rajkumar Periasamy has previously revealed that the film draws inspiration from real-life events and is envisioned as the opening chapter of a larger cinematic saga. Produced by Wunderbar Films in association with R Take Studios, Om: Chapter 1 also features music by Sai Abhyankkar and is expected to release in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam.

With every new announcement, Om: Chapter 1 is shaping up to be one of the biggest Indian films on the horizon. And with an ensemble now featuring Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela, Indrans and Naseeruddin Shah, the film’s cast has become every bit as compelling as the mystery surrounding its story.
