When Venkat Prabhu shared a video marking two years of The Greatest of All Time, it was not merely a trip down memory lane. The filmmaker used the occasion to create a striking parallel between Vijay’s character in the action thriller and his extraordinary journey from one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The video begins with footage from GOAT’s first-day-first-show, capturing the frenzy and excitement surrounding Vijay’s arrival on the big screen. It then starts drawing deliberate connections between scenes from the film and visuals from Vijay’s political career. What initially plays like a celebration of the film gradually takes on a very different meaning as the fictional world of GOAT is juxtaposed with Vijay’s life outside cinema.
The most conspicuous callback is the ‘TN07 CM 2026’ number plate, a detail that Venkat Prabhu had previously highlighted. The filmmaker has long taken pride in the fact that the prop appeared to anticipate Vijay’s eventual political rise, and the new video places the reference in the context of what has since unfolded.
A GOAT dialogue gets a new meaning
The video saves its most pointed parallel for the end. Sanjay, the younger character played by Vijay in GOAT, is heard declaring, “You think you can stop me?” The line then cuts to visuals of Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The juxtaposition gives the dialogue an entirely new context. In GOAT, the line belongs to a fictional character involved in a high-stakes battle. In Venkat Prabhu’s new edit, however, it becomes a bridge between Vijay’s screen persona and his political identity, effectively suggesting that the confidence and defiance associated with the actor’s characters have now found an unexpected parallel in his real-world journey.
It is this visual connection, rather than the film simply turning two years old, that gives Venkat Prabhu’s post its significance. The filmmaker appears to be revisiting GOAT through the lens of everything that happened after its release, particularly Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics.
GOAT’s place in Vijay’s transition
Released on September 5, 2024, The Greatest of All Time was Vijay’s penultimate film before he stepped away from acting to concentrate fully on politics. It was also his first collaboration with Venkat Prabhu and featured the actor in a dual role.
The film follows Gandhi, a former member of the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad whose past catches up with him years after leaving active service. Vijay also played the younger Sanjay, with the narrative building towards a confrontation between the two versions of his character. Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Sneha, Jayaram, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Ajmal and others were part of the ensemble cast.
Produced by AGS Entertainment, GOAT became a major commercial success despite receiving a mixed critical response. The film reportedly crossed Rs 200 crore worldwide within its first three days and eventually grossed more than Rs 450 crore globally, with Tamil Nadu and overseas markets accounting for a significant portion of its theatrical business.
The film was also packed with references designed for Vijay’s fan base, along with extensive use of de-ageing technology. An AI-assisted recreation of late actor Vijayakanth also became one of its most discussed elements.
But the context surrounding GOAT has changed dramatically since its release. Vijay has now moved from being the star at the centre of a theatrical celebration to holding one of the most powerful political offices in the state. Venkat Prabhu’s latest video acknowledges that transformation by using his own film as a visual bridge between the two phases of Vijay’s life.
The result is less an anniversary tribute than a carefully constructed piece of fan service that asks viewers to look back at GOAT with the benefit of hindsight. The ‘TN07 CM 2026’ plate and Sanjay’s “You think you can stop me?” now carry a significance that they could only acquire after Vijay’s political journey took the turn that Venkat Prabhu’s video celebrates.
