Malayalam cinema found an unusual and fitting launchpad on Monday when Tovino Thomas and Nazriya Nazim unveiled the title of their upcoming film, Gracias El Clasico, from Barcelona during the blockbuster La Liga encounter between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
A title reveal with a football twist
The actors, who were in attendance for the high-profile match, revealed the title with a new poster at the stadium and simultaneously shared it on their social media pages. The football-themed announcement instantly caught the attention of fans, not least because the title itself draws directly from the language and passion of the sport.
Directed by Muhsin Parari, Gracias El Clasico marks the first on-screen pairing of Tovino and Nazriya, two of Malayalam cinema’s most popular contemporary stars. The project also reunites Tovino with Muhsin after their successful collaboration on Thallumaala, a film celebrated for its kinetic style and youthful energy.
The screenplay has been written by Muhsin along with Zakariya Mohammed, the filmmaker behind Sudani from Nigeria. With two distinctive voices joining forces, expectations are naturally high for a film that appears to blend romance, family drama and football culture.
A relationship drama beyond “happily ever after”
Speaking recently about the project, Tovino described Gracias El Clasico as a relationship drama anchored in family dynamics. He said the story examines cousins, marriage, romance and the emotional complexities that emerge after relationships move beyond the conventional “happily ever after” stage.
According to the actor, the film focuses particularly on the married lives of millennials and ’90s kids, a space he believes Malayalam cinema has not explored in depth in recent years. Rather than centring solely on courtship, the narrative appears to look at what happens after the fairy-tale ending, when real life begins.
Tovino also emphasised that Nazriya’s role is just as significant as his own. He noted that the story revolves equally around both characters and the people in their orbit, suggesting an ensemble-driven film built on interpersonal relationships.
Football is expected to serve as a recurring thematic thread, making the title reveal at one of the sport’s most iconic fixtures especially apt. The combination of domestic drama and football culture gives the project a distinctive identity even before plot details have been formally disclosed.
The film boasts an impressive technical team. Vishnu Thandassery handles cinematography, Bles Thomas serves as editor, and Sushin Shyam composes the music. Sushin’s involvement adds further excitement, given his track record of crafting memorable soundscapes for contemporary Malayalam cinema.
Gracias El Clasico is produced by Saji Ali, Abbas Thirunavaya, Sameer Thahir and Shyju Khalid, with Pradeep CS and Shanir MK attached as co-producers.
