Vismaya Mohanlal, daughter of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is set to step into cinema with Thudakkam, which has now been confirmed for a theatrical release on August 7. The release date was announced on Saturday during the trailer launch event of Drishyam 3, another high-profile production backed by Antony Perumbavoor’s Aashirvad Cinemas.
Co-written and directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the filmmaker behind the blockbuster 2018, Thudakkam recently wrapped principal photography. The screenplay has been penned by Jude along with Linish Nellikkal and Akhil Krishna.
The title, which translates to “beginning,” serves as a fitting introduction to Vismaya’s entry into films. Known to the public through her poetry collection Grains of Stardust and her artwork, she has largely stayed away from the spotlight despite being the daughter of one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actors.
The film also marks the acting debut of Aashish Joe Antony, son of producer Antony Perumbavoor. Antony is producing the project under the Aashirvad Cinemas banner, which has been closely associated with many of Mohanlal’s most successful films and is also backing the much-anticipated Drishyam 3.
Strong cast and technical team
While the makers are yet to reveal details about the story, Pani actor Bobby Kurian and Dies Irae filmmaker Jibin Gopinath play important supporting roles in the film. Industry reports also suggest that Mohanlal himself will appear in an extended cameo, a prospect that has already heightened interest among fans eager to see father and daughter share screen space.
The film boasts an accomplished technical crew. Cinematography is by Jomon T John, music is composed by Jakes Bejoy, sound design is by Vishnu Govind, and editing is handled by Chaman Chakko. The action sequences are choreographed by Yannick Ben and Stunt Silva.
Thudakkam is set to arrive during a particularly busy month for Malayalam cinema. Also expected to release in August are Vysakh’s Khalifa, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran; RDX director Nahas Hidhayath’s I’m Game, featuring Dulquer Salmaan and Antony Varghese; and Girish AD’s romantic comedy Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju.
Even amid this crowded release slate, Thudakkam stands out because of the curiosity surrounding Vismaya Mohanlal’s first screen appearance. With Jude Anthany Joseph at the helm and a seasoned production house backing the project, the film arrives with considerable expectations and the promise of an intriguing new beginning.
