There is a fresh development around Race 4. If the latest industry buzz is anything to go by, the fourth instalment could be headed for a very different casting equation. Aamir Khan has reportedly liked the script of the film and is said to have brought Vijay Krishna Acharya on board to direct it.
A source close to the development tells us, “Aamir has heard the script and liked the material. He has shown keen interest in the film and wants Vijay Krishna Acharya to take over as director. Things are being discussed at the moment, and if everything falls into place, Aamir could become the new face of the Race franchise.”
If true, the development could mark a major shift for a franchise that has already changed its leading man once. Race began in 2008 with Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy. Directed by Abbas-Mustan, the film followed the tangled rivalry between brothers Ranvir and Rajiv Singh against the backdrop of horse racing, betrayal and elaborate insurance and murder plots. Saif and Anil Kapoor returned for Race 2 in 2013, which expanded the franchise with John Abraham, Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandez.
However, Race 3 (2018) starred Salman Khan, who replaced Saif as the central character. Remo D’Souza took over as director. The film was conceived as a standalone story rather than a continuation of the first two films.
Race 4, however, was subsequently developed as a return to the original storyline, with Saif confirmed to reprise his role. In April 2025, producer Ramesh Taurani officially said that the film was in its scripting stage and that discussions were underway with Saif Ali Khan and Sidharth Malhotra, while no other actors had been approached at that stage.
This latest development therefore represents a significant departure from what had previously been publicly confirmed. It would also reunite Aamir with Vijay Krishna Acharya, who directed him in Dhoom 3 and Thugs of Hindostan. Whether Aamir is actually stepping into the franchise, or merely exploring the project at this stage, remains to be officially confirmed.
